Social Media Strategy

By now you’ve probably heard of Social Media or you wouldn’t be here. But what exactly is social media, and how can it be used to help improve your business and your customer relationships i.e. What is Social Media Strategy ?

Let’s answer the first question – What is Social Media?

Social Media is the idea that the creation of internet content (text, video, pictures, music) is controlled by the masses and done in a manner that facilitates more interaction between the consumer and the retailer. And it is done using tools that are available at low or no cost. This is in contrast to traditional media where only the largest media companies in the world had the resources to create and distribute content. Simple Example: 30 years only a large media company could easily plan, script, produce and edit a 30 second commercial spot. And it had to be done on ABC, CBS or NBC.

Today you can do this in your home or business with a $200 high-definition camcorder and your own website. And everybody that watches that video can start a conversation about it and interact with the creator. The idea of Social Media is not new – it has been around for awhile. It is just the latest phrase being used to describe the idea and tools surrounding the idea.

The second question: What is a business Social Media strategy?

Any social media platform can be a powerful business marketing and branding platform. A popular Social Media site attracts millions of visitors a day. A subset of these millions are your future customers, your current customers, people that love your company and (possibly) people that can’t stand your company. The challenge is finding the right platforms and the right groups of people in each platform that is interested in what you have to say – either as a current or future customer. Your company then needs to find a way to interact with this audience without trying to sell yourself. You need to work on establishing trust and rapport with your audience. That becomes your social media strategy. Over time your organization  becomes the default choice when a consumer is ready to make a buying decision. Working in the Social Media world has the same rules as working in the real world. Consumers are more interested in working and building long-term relationships with trustworthy businesses than others that are around to make quick buck.
