Original: Social media for social media’s sake is getting pretty boring

This won’t be a long post but I promise it is well worth reading. The industry of marketing has gone past the point of sanity when it comes to social media. For several years this phrase has been used to describe every possible facet of the online world. Even things that were invented 10 years ago have now been wrapped up under the umbrella of this magical phrase. The number of conferences dedicated to talking about Facebook pages is ridiculous. And the rampant use of hashtags is starting to make us look like idiots with a basic English sentence. When you think about it… Social Media is pretty damn boring I’ve determined by my unscientific research that social media is great for talking about social media. It is great for talking about how social media influences our lives, and how good/bad information is passed around via social media. You know what else social media is good for ? Sharing information from people make a living analyzing social media. It’s a great place to watch people share reports and studies about how people use social media. It’s also great to judge the soul and worth of a person based on a single tweet. That is why Mashable, TMZ, etc. now just follow and quote tweet streams instead of doing what the normal press does: Interviews. Here are a few things I’ve noticed in the social media industry that we are obsessed with that we could tone down: Believing that traditional media is dying – There is never a new way of doing things that comes in instantly wipes out the old way. As soon as someone tells you that “social media” is the new way of doing things and that “traditional media is dying” you should leave the room. Television is not going anywhere. And if given a choice between using a TV commercial to advertise or a Twitter account, I’ll take the TV commercial every time. Different forms of media contribute to each other. So quit believing that social media is going replace everything in the world. People with large numbers of followers saying number of followers don’t matter – This gets back to social media being a circle jerk. The most popular people on social media (with few exceptions) are people that talk about social media. Publish enough overblown tips about social media, and you’ll start to gain a following. Start to gain a following and you’ll become a social media expert who is called upon to speak locally and nationally. Then get on stage and tell people that your 200,000 twitter followers don’t matter. Really? How in the heck did you get on stage if they don’t matter. Numbers definitely matter in social media. The numbers matter in all media. The more numbers the better. And the more quality numbers the better. But since you can’t tell the quality from one person to another you should definitely focus on numbers. Attending every social media conference – You can attend about five social media conferences before you realize they are repetitive. How many times can you watch someone on stage talk about the incredible value of 140 characters? That only takes 30 minutes to explain, and that is with a slow audience. This is why every social media conference usually becomes a general business conference. It has to to continue to generate interest once you’ve exhausted the sheer mind-numbing excitement of the hashtag. Tip: Look for the social media conferences that address business and marketing at a higher level. Klout – Yeah. If this is important to you then I am speechless. You are trying to measure your influence online? People on the internet generate content that other people read. Until Klout can measure how a Facebook update impacts the firing of the neurons in my brain (i.e. how it influences me) it is a nice toy. It is kids video game where people are competing for a high score. And then using that high score to determine their self-worth. These are the same people bragging that they are in the top 10% on LinkedIn. Solution: Go write a blog post instead of checking your Klout score every week. Human beings can do better We have an amazing set of communication tools at our fingertips. We should be using these to talk about how to solve world problems. Consider using social media to have deep discussions about the bigger issues affecting our lives and our businesses. Here are a few other things we should consider doing to cut back on the social media self-love noise. Don’t strive to be a social media expert. You will have a very short shelf life and a very limited audience. Learn about the bigger things in business (Lead generation, traffic generation, revenue generation), and then use social media to generate interest in bigger ideas. Stop signing up for every new tool that comes out. Stop telling your followers to do the same. It takes time away from the important things in life. Stop using hashtags. They look stupid and add no value at all. And adding meta data to your sentences to tell people what your sentence is about? Really? I thought the words in the sentence were supposed to take care of that. When someone says “Man I love this cup of coffee #good #coffee #beans #java” – I just sit there with my mouth open. As if one hastag didn’t look stupid enough I’ve seen people on Facebook add 10 tags to an image. Just WTF. Think bigger. Social media is not the beginning or ending of any marketing. It is a contributor. Don’t spend a lot of energy on it. Quit obsessing with measuring so much and trying to find ROI. Have you ever tried to measure the ROI of your vocal cords? No. It is pretty obvious. You get to use them to talk about yourself and your business. It is the same with social media. Meet more real [...]

To read this post on our site: Social media for social media’s sake is getting pretty boring

Original: Pheed Social Network – 5 Reasons Why I Love It

Pheed Social Network – My quick review Awhile back I was introduced to the Pheed Social network. As soon as I joined I noticed there were things that jumped out at me that made me fall in love with it. While it is not as popular as other social networks out there right now (nothing new is), I think it has the potential to blow up as people get tired of the basics of Twitter and want more. Five Reasons Why I Love the Pheed Social Network (and so should you): 420 Character updates. Yes! I know why Twitter has 140 characters. But man it is annoying. (What is even more annoying is people that say “Twitter makes you a better writer”). But forget that on the Pheed Social Network. They give you enough space to write a whole paragraph. Thank you Pheed for adding that. Monetization from Day One – As you browse around Pheed you will see that they have built-in monetization from day one. They know they need to make money, and they are not shy about it. The other social networks are bombarding us with advertising to pay their bills and we have no choice. I get it. But I’d also be down for paying for great content. Pheed has put the tools in place to allow me to do this. Thank you Pheed for adding that. Built in video broadcasting – Just wow on this one. It is part of their monetization package. But you can broadcast live or scheduled video right in your Pheed stream for your followers to watch. Thank you Pheed for adding that. Audio Only Updates – Who else has this – seriously? You can record a quick audio file and post it, or you can upload prerecorded content. This is great for me because I’d rather talk (being a professional public speaker and all) than type. Thank you Pheed for adding that. You can vote DOWN content – Every social network has the ability to give a virtual “approval” of a piece of content. Whether you like, favorite, add to list, etc. we have ways of showing our approval for every piece of content. It has always surprised me that there has never been a way to vote DOWN content – until now. The Pheed Social Network has an “I don’t love” button right next to the “I Love” button. All content in the world is not great. Some of it is wrong, and some of it is pointless. Thank you Pheed for adding that feature. Watch the video below and Join me over on Pheed. Check out my interview on KSBI TV about the Pheed Social Network:

To read this post on our site: Pheed Social Network – 5 Reasons Why I Love It

Original: Author Rank: How to Become an Expert and Not Lose Your Mind

If you live (and love) in the world of content management, search engine optimization, or social media then you have probably seen a series of blog posts come out about a new topic: Google Author Rank. What is Author Rank Patrick? This is the (supposedly) new formula that Google will use to rank search results. The new Google Author Rank formula will lower former factors in search engine optimization (inbound links, keyword density, etc) and start factoring in the credibility of the author. How will Google know the credibility of the author, you ask? Great question. Author rank will look at the Google Profile associated with every piece of content. Each Google Profile is attributed to a person. This is called Google Authorship. If you are an avid user of Google Plus then you have instant credibility in the Author Rank formula. The more social activity you have and the more circles you belong to will also be factored in to determine your worthiness as a god among internet authors. Of course with this will come the frenzy of people begging for plus ones for all of their content. We saw this happen with Facebook, and now it will happen on Google Plus to boost Author Rank. So what is the problem Patrick? The challenge (never a problem) is this: “Author Rank” is not a real thing yet. It exists in the minds of bloggers only, and one obscure Microsoft patent. Matt Cutts hasn’t done a video on it, and it is not something you are going to find in any Google help pages (yet). The world of content management is going crazy over an idea. Prominent bloggers are writing posts on “How to prepare for Google Author Rank” when they don’t know what it is going to look like or how it is going to work. (And if you read their blog posts they aren’t saying anything new about SEO). I’ve been involved in many discussions where people are actually getting stressed about the topic. Calm down bloggers. Here is what you do: Follow the same Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques that you should have been following all along. If you follow the list below then you will be covered when it comes to Author Rank. Don’t freak out over any new magic rules. And don’t change the content management plan that you had in place. Write great focused content about your niche. Share your content in as many places as possible. Social Media and Triberr.com are great for this. Be sure that you are using the Yoast SEO plugin if you are using WordPress. When writing a blog post, link to your other pages and blog posts. Find ways to link from other sites back to your blog posts/pages. Don’t link to your home page. Write a blog post series on to increase the chance that a reader will click on your three part sieres when the see “Blog Post 1 of 3″ in the google search results. Be sure your have set up Google Authorship on your website. Click here to watch a video on how to do that. Be sure that your Google Plus profile is complete. Be sure that you are active on Google Plus Repeat #1 and #2. These rules are not new. These rules were the same a month ago, three months ago, and twelve months ago. Moral of THIS story? There is no magic to SEO, and the rules rarely change. You should print out that list above and stick it on the wall behind your monitor. Read it every day. Read it before and after you create any page or post on your site. If you’d like some additional information on Google Author Rank you can also check out the fine work at the CopyBlogger site.

To read this post on our site: Author Rank: How to Become an Expert and Not Lose Your Mind

Original: Facebook Social Search Graph – Just the facts ma’am

Social Search Graph for Facebook You have come to the right place. Here is what we know so far: Facebook Social Search Graph will not work like your typical search engine optimization. You will not be able to optimize headlines, keyword density, inbound links, etc. Instead you are searching your users updates and actions. People perform text updates on Facebook all day long so that will be searchable. But people also take actions on Facebook that you will be able to search. And action on Facebook is like a verb in real world. In Facebook you can define actions, and then define who took those actions, and what they did. So “Check In” is an action. That is associated with a person, a location, and a comment. You will likely be able to search actions just like you can search text on Facebook. One of the more important things that people are not discussing about social search graph: Facebook has a better grasp on meta information than any of the search engines. Google is just now rolling out tags that indicate whether a piece of text is a person, place or a thing. Facebook has had this for awhile. In addition, Facebook also has the verb that the thing/object is doing. That is a very powerful combination, and I’m interested to see how they are going to use it. Tips from the Facebook crew themselves: The name, category, vanity URL, and information you share in the “About” section all help people find your business and should be shared on Facebook.

Original: Guest Post: Six legal tips to consider when starting a business.

Today is a lucky day for us. We get to hear from legal expert Shawn Roberts. Shawn is a practicing attorney with over 14 years of experience in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he lives with his wife and two boys. His specialities are Small Business and Oklahoma Estate Planning. You can learn more about Shawn and his website http://www.shawnjroberts.com or by following him on Twitter at @ShawnJRoberts . Today he gives us some great advice on how to set up your business the right way from day one. If you have not followed what he recommends below then you should get on it ASAP to set yourself up for success early. Amidst the adrenaline rush of creating a new business, there are several legal items I regularly discuss with people who are starting a business. Below are six (6) critical items you need to consider prior to getting your business up and running: Be an entity. You may have been called worse things, but this is actually not a slam. An entity, in this context, is a structure that provides separation between you, your assets and your business. For example, a corporation and a limited liability company are both entities. In contrast, someone doing business under their name, with nothing more formal, is operating as a “sole proprietor”; there is no separation between personal and business. What type of entity should I be? Surprisingly, for legal purposes there is not a huge difference. Both a corporation and a limited liability company provide a wall of separation between their owners and the business. A corporation has shareholders, a limited liability company typically has members. Have your organizational documents in place. For a corporation, it is written minutes of the organizational meeting of the shareholders and board of directors, plus bylaws. For a limited liability company, it is an operating agreement. Know who your employees are or are not. One of the easiest ways for a business to create a mountain of liability is to treat individuals who are actually employees as independent contractors. That means failing to withhold taxes and do payroll properly and to secure worker’s compensation insurance. If you have any doubt about whether an individual is an employee or independent contract, talk to an attorney. You do not want to get caught in the Independent Contractor Trap. Protect your Intellectual Property. If you have words, pictures, symbols, code, software or an invention, take the proper steps to legally and officially claim ownership to it. It might be registering a trademark, securing a trade name, seeking copyright or even patent protection. Maintain the regular records that are required. For a corporation, it is at least the written records of shareholders and directors meetings and other major actions. Treat the entity like it is a separate and distinct entity (separate records, separate bank accounts, etc. . .). What other issues have you considered when starting a business?

To read this post on our site: Guest Post: Six legal tips to consider when starting a business.

Original: Video: How to Install WordPress in Five Minutes

You still don’t have a website up for your business? Today we are going to fix that. If you have ever wanted to know how to install WordPress but were afraid it would be too technical or complicated for you then today is your lucky day. I made a quick five minute video that will get your WordPress website up and running before you can finish that next cup of coffee. If this is still too complicated and you’d like us to install WordPress for you then follow the instructions in the video to sign up for a new hosting account. You must use the link for GetYourWebsiteToday.com. Once you have completed your hosting sign up, email your new hosting instruction support at allaboutfocus.com. Within 24 hours will take care of all of the steps needed from our “How to install wordpress” video. But don’t waste any more time NOT having website. Watch the video, install WordPress, and start down your path to online marketing bliss. Here are the steps you need to get your first website up and running Determine your time and financial budget that you are willing to allocate to getting your website up and running. After you read all of this you will have the resources you need to get started. But for the long-term you may want to have someone in your staff manage your web content and design elements. Take a few minutes and think about the domain names (yourwebsitename.com) that you might like to have. The domain name is the gateway to your site. It will be on all of your advertising and it will be where you get your email. If your business is regions consider having the city or state as part of your domain name. Come up with several ideas, and then pick one and commit to it. Do not buy several thinking you might change later. Try to keep it as short as possible. Think of easy phrases for people to remember when deciding your domain name. Can your potential client say it and remember it easily? Example: An Oklahoma City plumber is trying to come up with domain ideas. Good options: okcplumber.com, oklahomapipeman.com, okcpipeman.com, okcfixmyplumbing.com, cleanmypipes.com. Bad Options: oklahomaplumbingandpiperepair.com (too long). Make sure you have your wallet handy to buy the $12 domain name and inexpensive monthly hosting Visit GetYourWebsiteToday Select the option to order new hosting. Select the main option at the top to get started. Sometimes it is also called “Order Shared Web Hosting” Use their order wizard which will guide you through the ordering and payment process. Once your order is complete you will receive an email that has the details for your new hosting account. It should have your domain login information and password. DO NOT LOSE THIS. Log in using the information in your welcome email Watch the video below Enjoy your new website Enjoy and share it around if it is useful.

To read this post on our site: Video: How to Install WordPress in Five Minutes

Original: Looking for the best Blog Hosting and Web Hosting Company?

If you have thought about starting a website or a blog then you have inevitably ran into the question that all online marketers run into: How in the world do I know the worst or best blog hosting company to host my pages? How do I know their reputation? How good is their support? Do they support WordPress? What happens if I have a problem at 3 am? The list goes on and on. So where can you find the best blog hosting? My brothers and sisters I am here to tell you that I went through that same journey. When I started I didn’t even know what the concept of a domain or website hosting was. Then once I started the search for the best blog hosting company out there I had a rough journey. I have probably gone through at least 20 different hosting companies looking for my utopia. There was even a time where I got really frustrated and I started my own hosting company. Trust me – unless you are a super-geek don’t ever go that route. It is not pretty. And then I found them – Hostgator Hostgator had the best of all worlds for me – and I am a pretty picky guy. So after much pain and suffering I present to you my top five reasons why I believe that Hostgator is the best blog hosting company on the planet. Speed – One of the biggest secrets of the online marketing is how much website speed affects your website ranking. Google wants anybody using their search engine to get the best results first. One of the criteria that determines “best” is the site speed. The greatest site in the world will be on page 10 of Google if it is slow. You always want to ensure that your site is hosted on the fastest possible server that you can find. All of the Hostgator servers are great when it comes to speed. Support – Just OMG in this area. Forget the great phone support. Forget the very busy forums they have. Completely ignore the awesome email support. Just take a look at their home page. They have 24/7/365 live chat support. I have used it several times. And they always solve my issues. You are never alone when it comes to hosting support at Hostgator. Ease of Use – They use the hosting industry Cpanel for their hosting/email control panel. It is the most popular control panel out there, and very easy to use. Once you have signed up with hosting you can use the control panel to install WordPress. How long will it take? If you are eating a sandwich we’ll say about five minutes. If you are not eating a sandwich then it will be closer to 60 seconds. And there will be no crumbs on the keyboard. Upgrade Path – Let me give you a quick hosting education. The natural path for hosting as your site gets bigger is: Shared Hosting, Reseller Hosting, VPS Hosting, Dedicated Hosting. It is hard to find a company that does all of these well. But Hostgator nails all of them. Once you start with Hostgator you will probably never have to find another hosting company. Windows and Linux Hosting – You may never need it. But there are specific applications that requires a Windows hosting environment. Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to make the same hunt all over again for a Windows hosting company? Go with Hostgator and you will be comforted knowing that you are set no matter what applications or content management systems you decided to use. They have your back in all cases. Bonus – that place looks like a great place to work. Check out the Hostgator Blog sometime. They update it on a regular basis, and they do a lot more than the same old boring “this is why you should use us” blog posts. I see shenanigans going on there all of the time. That looks like a great work environment. But don’t just take my word for it. Check out this recent info graphc from the smart people over at Blogging.org. Then go sign up today for the best blog hosting company out there, Hostgator. You won’t regret it. Check it out – the best Blog Hosting Companies all in one place.

To read this post on our site: Looking for the best Blog Hosting and Web Hosting Company?

Original: Five Things You Can Do Right Now To Increase Website Traffic

Getting More WordPress Traffic What is the best sign that you are making progress in the online marketing world? It should always be the number of conversions. And by conversion I am talking about two things: How many people signed up for your email list, and how many people checked out using your shopping cart. But online marketing (like all marketing) is based on a funnel. You have to get A LOT of people into the top of the funnel to get anybody out of the bottom. The very top of your funnel comes from the number of website visitors. So one of the goals of any great online marketing program is to get as many people to your website as possible by any means necessary. Take any (or all) of these actions now to immediately increase website traffic: . Create a new blog post. The search engines rank all organic content by two factors: Relevancy and Recency. Most people are great at the relevancy part, but it is really easy to become a slacker in the recency department. All things being equal, the business who as a website that changes (via blog posts) more often will always rank higher in the search engine. In addition to ranking higher their site will also be scanned more often by the search engines. You should be laying out an editorial calendar and publishing content your website no less than once a week. This is hard to do (look at my site) but extremely important. So as soon as you finish reading my blog post you should go post a new one of your own. Don’t come up with any excuses. Just do it. Comment on 5 other blogs. Your blog is only as popular as the number of links that are sent your way. The temporary one from social media are great, but you want those nice, long-term, juicy links that come from other content-based websites. One of the easiest ways to pay attention to what other bloggers in your industry are saying, and then offering a relevant comment in the comment area. The nice part about this is that most comment area have a place for you to list your site. Have you ever had WordPress comment spam? That is what happening. People are leaving WordPress comment spam by the thousands to get as many back links as possible. So go hunt down five blogs that you like right now and leave a useful comment. Then watch your traffic spike. Then come back here and thank me Join Triberr and build your tribe. Are there fellow bloggers that publish such great content that you know you are going to tweet it out? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a system that made that as easy as possible? Welcome to Triberr. This is a great service created by the infamous Dino Dogan that makes sharing content that you were going to share anyways as easy as possible. It is like having your own personal news syndication network. When you create content you have a guaranteed audience. How big is that audience? With the right tribe it could be in the millions. If you want to get started with Triberr drop me a comment here or on Twitter account @patrickallmond. I might have a tribe that would be a good fit for you. Whenever I use Triberr properly on my website I see my traffic skyrocket. Join, post and participate in a forum about your industry. This has three benefits. 1) You get to hang around your peers and learn/grow with them 2) If you ever have any content on your blog relevant to a conversation thread you can drop in a backlink to your site 3) Almost all forums allow you to have a customized post signature. With that post signature you can drop in a link back to your site. You’d be surprised how many clicks I get from all the forums that I have participated in over the years. They are great for long-term, high quality back links. Push your social media followers to your website. If you are a business then you should always be looking for ways to push visitors back to your website. As fun as it is to post pictures and share information, all of that social media participation does not put food on the table. Getting leads back your site, getting them the participate in your OWN platform, and getting them to buy is what makes it rain. You should be looking for a way to drop a link to good content on your site at least 1-2 times a day. I’ll swear on a bag of beef jerky (and I love my beef jerky) that all of these tips work wonders and will increase website traffic. So what are you waiting for? Get moving and get that website traffic flowing

To read this post on our site: Five Things You Can Do Right Now To Increase Website Traffic

Original: Do Not Anger the Internet

Pay attention to what is going on with @taintpublishing in Oklahoma City and take away this lesson: Do not anger the internet. Do not mock the internet. Do not boast and brag, and pretend you can control the internet. If you do you will anger the internet. When you anger the internet it comes back at you in amazing ways. Ways that you will not understand, nor will you be able to control. The internet will laugh at you, mock you, and beat the crap out of you. The internet will make videos and memes about you. And there is nothing you can do about it. There is no lawsuit, lawyer or judge in the world that can stop the internet. The internet never forgets. And it will gladly share all of the information it knows 24/7/365. Do not anger the internet.

To read this post on our site: Do Not Anger the Internet

Original: Video: Pinterest on KSBI Social Media Monday

On our April 2012 segment on KSBI we chatted about Pinterest. Pinterest is now among the trendiest and most-widely used social media websites. What makes it very unique compared to other social medias like Twitter and Facebook is that it is image-based. And people do love pictures! Pictures are worth a thousand words. With Pinterest, you can upload, pin or re-pin any interesting pictures that you can share to your friends in any way possible. Watch this live video coverage on KSBI In Pinterest, building your social network is very easy, without even having to say anything as the pictures you’re sharing are enough to convey your message. Another good reason to use Pinterest is the ability to find stuff that interest you. It’s like Google image search engine with the ability to like, comment on, and share (repin) pictures among those who belong to your network. Now that is something really engaging and really helpful too. Like any major social medias, you can join Pinterest for FREE. Signing up is very easy too! Just go to pinterest.com and click on “Join Pinterest”, and then sign up using your Facebook account. Once your account is activated, you can start building your network; upload, pin, or repin pictures of your liking – and that’s it, GO SOCIAL!

To read this post on our site: Video: Pinterest on KSBI Social Media Monday

Original: Outbound Marketing Is Not Dead

I laugh and laugh when people say outbound marketing is dead. It is so far from dead. It is alive, well and you need it How do you think people find out about your company brand? You can’t sit back, play on social media, SEO, YouTube and cross your fingers that your customers find you. TV Ads still work great. Billboards are not going anywhere soon, and direct mail still brings in customers. Do not buy into any hype that says Outbound Marketing is dead. Outbound Marketing goes by another name: ADVERTISING. It is still very much needed if you want to expand your customer base.

To read this post on our site: Outbound Marketing Is Not Dead
